Kenneggy Sands Beach

Kenneggy Sands is a secluded south-coast beach between Penzance and Helston, reached on foot only when the tide allows. Visit Cornwall recommends approaching along the South West Coast Path from either Praa Sands or Prussia Cove. When uncovered, the bay offers a strip of golden sand framed by rocky outcrops and steep, wildflower-covered cliffs, with far less built development than the better-known beaches around Mount’s Bay.

The walk is part of the appeal. The surrounding coast has strong smuggling associations, and the route passes sites linked with the Carter brothers, including bricked-up cellars and cottages said to have been intended to obstruct their activities. Kenneggy therefore works best as a walking destination and a quiet coastal stop rather than a beach chosen for cafés, easy roadside access or a full range of visitor facilities.

Tide planning is essential because the sand can be inaccessible and visitors risk being cut off as the water returns. Check an authoritative tide table before setting out, leave a generous margin for the walk back and take suitable footwear, water and a charged phone. Cornwall Council’s beach-safety guidance also warns that tides can move quickly and advises choosing a lifeguarded beach if you need supervised swimming; at Kenneggy, the sensible priority is the coast walk and scenery, with any time near the water judged carefully against the conditions.
